If you find yourself in this situation, Google offers the perfect solution: Google Adwords. What is Google Adwords? Google Adwords is a Pay-Per-Click Advertising programme, meaning that you only pay for the ad when someone actually clicks on it. Google launched its first version in 2003, and it has been rapidly growing since. How does it work? The ads you create through Google Adwords show up on the right side of (and sometimes above) the results page when you search something on Google. In the image below you will see the results of a Google search for "key ring". The parts that are highlighted are advertisements made with the Google Adwords program.
Why should I use Google Adwords? It might be hard and time consuming to get your website to appear on the first results of Google. You will have to do all kinds of Search Engine Optimization to reach that result. Google Adwords allows you to buy placement, on the first page of search results for certain keywords, that you set yourself. For example: If you are selling key rings on your website, it might be hard to appear as the first result. With Google Adwords, it is possible to appear in the sponsored links list, when someone types in "key ring". And the best thing about it is, that you can target your campaign to your needs specifically. You can not only target for keywords, but also for region, time, language and more! So if you sell key rings in Little Rock, Arkansas, you can make sure that your ad will only pop up for people, who search for "key ring", during office hours and who reside within a 50 mile radius of Little Rock! How much will this cost me? As much as you want to spend on it! With Google Adwords you can set the maximum amount of money you want to spend on it, and pause, stop or delete campaigns whenever you want it. This allows you to have short campaigns for temporary offers for example, and you can stop them immediately when the offer expires. Now that you know how it works, I would suggest to take a minute to think if this really is something for your website/company/product. Even though this programme sounds amazing and probably is the best thing out there for small business internet marketing, it could very well be that your company/website/ product doesn't need these kind of marketing techniques.
